Abastract:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dying and being reborn mentioned in Plath\u2019s \u201cLady Lazarus\u201d can be paralleled with the poet\u2019s own life \u2013 she nearly drowned when she was ten in 1942, although she claimed it was an accident (Clark, 2020); in 1953 when she was 20 she tried to take her own life by swallowing pills and hiding in a cellar (or front porch in some accounts) where she was discovered after three days and rescued (American National Biography, \u201cPlath, Sylvia\u201d). Plath\u2019s final (and successful) suicide attempt came in the third decade of her life, when she put her head inside a gas oven in 1963 (N\u00e9meth, 2019). This does not take into account the time when in 1962, one year before she died, she drove her car into the river (American National Biography, \u201cPlath, Sylvia\u201d). Clear parallels can thus be seen in her poem \u201cLady Lazarus\u201d, which is narrated from the perspective of a fictional persona who attempts death, as a metaphor for rebirth and revival, every decade. Using Julia Kristeva\u2019s concept of power of the horror and abjection, Judith Butler\u2019s Gender performativity, and Luce Irigaray\u2019s woman as commodity, the current study comments on Plath\u2019s \u201cLady Lazarus\u201d from a psycho-feminist perspective. Dividing the analysis into three parts that focus on resistance by and agency of the female sex, voyeurism or objectification, and the subversion of death as rebirth, this study concludes that Plath uses psychology to subverts patriarchy in \u201cLady Lazarus\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
