Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metaphor is the use of a word in a meaning other than its original one based on a relationship of similarity, along with a contextual clue that prevents understanding the literal meaning. It differs from metonymy in that its relationship is similarity. A metaphor has three elements: the borrowed-for (the subject compared), the borrowed-from (the object of comparison), and the borrowed word itself. Metaphors are classified as original when the borrowed word is a noun, and derivative when it appears in a verb or a derived form; they are also classified as explicit when the object of comparison is mentioned, and implicit when it is omitted and indicated by one of its attributes. According to accompanying elements, metaphors are divided into absolute, stripped, and reinforced; according to the two sides of comparison, they are either compatible or incompatible; and according to the common ground, they are general and clear or special and subtle requiring reflection. The most eloquent type is the extended (representative) metaphor, which appears in a complete expression and may become a well-known proverb. Metaphor is more eloquent than simile because of its conciseness, strength of meaning, and its ability to present abstract ideas in sensory images. As for metonymy, it is the use of a word while intending a meaning implied by it, with the possibility of intending the literal meaning as well. Metonymy is divided into metonymy of an attribute, of a described entity, and of attribution, and it is more eloquent than direct expression because it conveys meaning with evidence, uses subtlety and brevity, and presents intellectual meanings in tangible forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
