Abstract:
The study examines al-Ṣafadī’s view on the Arabic letters and the disjoined letters (al-ḥurūf al-muqaṭṭaʿa) in the Qur’an, comparing them with the views of other scholars. Al-Ṣafadī begins by establishing the foundations of the Arabic letters, affirming that their arrangement has two aspects: an abjad (alphabetic) order derived from divine revelation, and a phonetic order based on points of articulation. He then turns to the disjoined letters that open certain sūrahs, admitting that he struggled to understand their meanings until God opened his understanding after a retreat lasting three years, while acknowledging that he is not infallible from error. Al-Ṣafadī holds that these letters are the substance of speech and the intermediary between the Truth (God) and creation, and that they were made as signs indicating that the Qur’an is composed of these Arabic letters—a challenge to the Arabs to produce something like it.

He presents a unique argument that nearly every word of the Qur’an contains one of these fourteen letters, which serves as proof of its inimitability (iʿjāz), likening the letters to foundational stones and the rest to clay and filler.
Al-Ṣafadī severely criticises the “Ḥurūfiyyah” (those who extravagantly delve into the esoteric secrets of letters), considering that letters are merely vessels with no intrinsic value, and compares them to a sick person who occupies himself with reciting the prescription instead of using the medicine. He emphasises that the divine challenge was directed at the composed Qur’an, not at the individual letters.
As for the majority of the Salaf (early pious predecessors)—such as the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and Ibn Masʿūd—they held that these letters are among what God has kept exclusively to Himself, and that the obligation is to believe in them without delving into their interpretation; this is the preponderant view among the verifying scholars. He transmits from Ibn Kathīr his rejection of interpreting them through abjad numerology (ḥisāb al-jummal), and from al-Saʿdī that the safest course is to remain silent about their meaning without a legal basis.
